Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effects of loneliness in correlation between participation in social activity and life satisfaction in low-income aged people living alone. The subjects are 294 aged people older than 65 residing in Gyeonggi province. They have right to receive a basic living subsidy with no family or person to live with and use a senior welfare center. Using a structural equation model, this author conducted analysis over the study questions. According to the results, in low-income aged people living alone, participation in social activity and loneliness influence life satisfaction significantly. Also, a sense of loneliness mediates the effects of participation in social activity on life satisfaction. This implies that when low-income aged people living alone indicate more participation in social activity and feel loneliness less, their life satisfaction becomes higher. Participation in social activity lowers loneliness in low-income aged people living alone and enhances their life satisfaction. Based on the results, this author suggests it is needed to lay the ground to improve participation in social activity in low-income aged people living alone, enhance their social factors, form a cooperative network, expand their participation in social activity quantitatively, and increase psychological and emotional services for them.
